Day 1

Your expert 4WD driver/guide will pick you up from the Adelaide metropolitan area and pass through historic townships and areas important in Aboriginal tradition.

You emerge from the Mt Lofty Ranges to arrive at Lake Alexandrina where the Murray River spreads out before ending its journey to the sea. At Wellington, you cross the river by the ferry, situated next to the Old Courthouse and Police Station.

Along the shores of Lake Alexandrina you will pass Poltalloch Station, an historic homestead with all the grandeur of a bygone era. This road brings you through Narrung, the site of Australia’s only inland lighthouse to the Aboriginal community of Raukkan.

From here, you follow some of the back roads to arrive at the Coorong, one of the worlds most significant and world heritage listed wetlands. This narrow neck of water is of great importance both in Aboriginal culture and to over 235 species of birds that live here or migrate through the region.

The 4WD track through the Coorong National Park takes you through the habitat of kangaroos, emus and other bird life. Having traveled through the land of the Ngarrindjeri people, you now arrive at Camp Coorong. Here you will meet the traditional people of this country. They will share with you stories of their history and their culture, their beliefs and traditions.

Next is a visit to Parnka Point before traveling a short distance to your overnight accommodation at Policeman’s Point.  Spend the evening relaxing or enjoy an evening stroll through the neighboring bushland.

Cross the magnificent sand hills and stroll along the shell-studded beach, a feature of this section of the Australian coast.  Leaving the beach, travel along the scenic Loop Road including a visit to the working Mallee Fowl nest, before arriving at the Coorong Wilderness Lodge for lunch.

You will be shown an Ngarrindjeri Creation Story video and then taken on an Aboriginal Guided Bushwalk to experience plant and animal life, bush tucker medicine and history.
