DAY 1:
Travel north, from Adelaide to the picturesque Flinders Ranges.

Travel north from Adelaide to the Flinders Ranges.

Enjoy morning tea on the Port Augusta foreshore. Visit Wadlata Outback Centre for hands on interpretative displays about the history and culture of the Flinders Ranges.

Lunch in Wadlata or at Port Augusta or Quorn.

Pass through the historic town of Hawker to experience the vast and diverse landscapes of the Aussie outback. Pass through the outback towns of Leigh Creek and Copley.

Visit the Quandong Cafe for an afternoon drink (at guests own expense).

Check in and relax in your choice of accommodation. Motel accommodation in Leigh Creek or Nepabunna Aboriginal Community stay.

Leigh Creek Township

Leigh Creek is a company coal mining town on the edge of the desert. It is a new township because the original settlement at Leigh Creek, located 13 km north of the present site, happened to be under the coal seam. It is a modern township with a modern shopping centre, a series of neat modern roads and small, housing that has been built to house the workers and their families who provide the labour force for the huge Leigh Creek open cut coal mine which exists 22 km north of the town.

Nepabunna Community

Nepabunna is an Aboriginal community situated approximately 60km east of Copley along the Copley to Balcanoona Road. At Nepabunna community you experience a genuine spontaneous Adnyamathanha Aboriginal cultural experience right in the middle of the Nepabunna township. Located in the now closed Nepabunna Aboriginal School, the school camp offers modest dorm styled accommodation in the old classrooms. A newly renovated school hall offers a dining area with decking providing views of the surrounding mountainside.

DAY 2:
After Breakfast, start the morning with a drive to visit a spectacular and secluded Aboriginal engraving and etching site.

Walk through the scenic creek bed and marvel at ancient artwork dating back many thousands of years. Enjoy your bush foods morning tea in this peaceful location.

Learn about the early history of the Adnyamathanha people. See the remnants of Mineruta a former location of an Aboriginal community.

After lunch, we visit an Aboriginal site renowned for its timeless cave paintings. Hear interpretations of the artwork and reflect on the teachings of an Aboriginal creation story.

Return to accommodation for dinner and some company for the evening.

DAY 3:
Set out for an early morning tour.

Stop for morning tea in a gum tree lined creek bed.

Tour to Ithala Awi (Italowie Gorge) and learn about native bush foods.

Visit Balcanoona Rangers’ Headquarters.

Visit a beautiful gorge to experience remote yet timeless ancient Aboriginal engravings and rock etchings, and hear a creation story that explains geographical features of the surrounding area. Picnic lunch.

Leave for a scenic tour on a drive through breath-taking Gorges and view magnificent geological rock formations and look for the endangered yellow-footed rock wallabies and other wildlife.

Arrive at Wilpena Pound Resort, settle in and dine at the restaurant before retiring to the resorts deluxe accommodation.

DAY 4:

Enjoy a full buffet breakfast at the restaurant.

Visit local Aboriginal rock art site depicting the creation of Wilpena Pound (1.5 hr moderate walk) or have a sleep in with a later breakfast and relax in the Wilpena Resort surrounds and visit the Information Centre.

Depart for the historic town of Hawker and have lunch. Visit the Wilpena Panorama Gallery in Hawker and see a magnificent 360° degree painting of Wilpena Pound and locally produced art, craft and food.

Depart for Adelaide visit a Cellar Door for a quick wine tasting in the Clare Valley on the way home (time permitting).
