You will begin your day of exploration northward through the beautiful and historic township of Gawler. From here your adventure takes you north into the wine regions of the Clare Valley. The Clare Valley continues to be known as the home of Australian Riesling. As Australian wine regions go, Clare Valley is small, accounting for 1.5% of the nations crush. But its boutique wines are select and moreover, they’re taking the world by storm. There will be plenty of opportunities visit a selection of wineries throughout the day. The stone villages are little changed from the days of the bullock-dray, the grand pastoral properties still look out over immense rolling hills and we treasure the pockets of pristine bushland.
O/n – Bungaree Homestead or Clare Valley Country Club
Day 2
This morning you will continue north with the legendary lilac haze of the Flinders Ranges looming ever closer through vast sheep station country. The Flinders Ranges are home to a vast number of native animals and birds, which abound amongst the gum trees and on the steep, ragged slopes of the gorges. The vibrant colours of the rock faces, change through the day with the passage of the sun. Dusk and dawn is unforgettably spectacular. You will make a few stops along the way to famous Prairie Hotel for lunch. This historic Outback pub situated along the original Old Ghan Railway Line has an international reputation for its cuisine, in particular, its feral food menu including kangaroo and emu (other meals available). After lunch you will quickly find yourself in the habitat of Australia’s famous wildlife – not only kangaroos and emus live here in abundance, but also many species of birds and reptiles. From here, you continue into Bunyeroo and Brachina Gorges, over hills and ridges, along riverbeds and through gullies. This region was once an ancient seabed and it now carries some of the most important early fossils known. Here you will find 600 million-year-old-fossils, a time span that defies understanding. Wilpena Pound Resort is your destination tonight, providing access to glorious walking trails and excellent accommodation. Optional scenic flights are available (own cost)
O/n – Wilpena Pound Resort or optional Rawnsley Park Eco Villas
Day 3
This morning journey takes you through the Moralana Scenic Drive boasting more magnificent views as you travel between the southern face of Wilpena Pound and the northern face of the Elder Range. After lunch you make your way from Quorn, the home of the famous Pichi Richi Steam Railway, through the Pichi Richi Pass and Devils Peak to the windswept high country with views over the Spencer Gulf. See some of the historic seaside townships after leaving the Pass and making your way along the coast. The narrow corridor between the Indian Ocean and mountains gives way to the rich farming land that takes you back to Adelaide.
